Action and side effects

A

Glucose is the principle energy source for body cells,
especially the brain. As a gel it is rapidly absorbed
via the gastointestinal tract (GIT) thus reversing the
effects of hypoglycaemia.

SIDE EFFECTS
• Nausea and vomiting
• Diarrhoea

Indications, contraindications and precautions

A
• Symptomatic
Hypoglycemia with
BGL<4mmol/l and able to
tolerate oral glucose i.e.
able to talk and swallow
  • Absent swallowing ability
  • < 2 years old
  • Unconsciousness

No precautions

adult- EMT 1
EMT 2 PO
15g Glucose Gel
Repeat once at 15 minutes if
BGL is <4.0 mmol/L
Max dose 30g
paediatric: EMT 1
EMT 2 PO
> 2 years 15g Glucose Gel
Repeat once at 15 minutes if
BGL is <4.0 mmol/L
Max dose 30g
