What are the benefits of goal setting
Increases motivation to keep on trying which allows the performer to become task persistent. Once the goal is achieved intrinsic motivation will increase
Improves the confidence of the performer since they can experience improvement in technique and results if target is reached
Regulates and sustains effort - people may begin to try harder as goals are almost reached
What do performance goals help with
Reducing anxiety and giving consistent motivation due to no competition
What is the problem with outcome goals
They can provide stress in comparison to other types of goals
What should a goals set be
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Time bound
Evaluated
Redone
What is specific with regards to goal setting
Goals should be position and sport specific for the performer
Eg. a netball centre aiming to improve agility
What is measurable with regards to goal setting
Goals should be able to be assessed with stats and scores
Eg. a swimmer reducing freestyle time by 2 seconds
What is achievable with regards to goal setting
The goal must be within reach of the performer
Eg. increasing the number of tackles a footballers makes each game
What is realistic with regards to goal setting
Ensuring the goal is within the performers ability
Eg. a high jumper who jumps 1.2 metres aiming to jump 1.25
What is time bound with regards to goal setting
How long the goal needs to be reached in
Eg. a football team aims to finish 3rd by the end of the season
What is evaluate with regards to goal setting
Performer looks at successes and failures with goals
Eg. a netball team didn’t make top 3 due to poor attack turning to defence
What is re do with regards to goal setting
Revisit failures and goals which were not hit
Eg. a netball team aims to be 1st 3 quarters into a season by improving defence
