What is a leader
Someone who has an influence on helping others to achieve their goals

Prescribed leader
Emergent leader
What is a prescribed leader? Give an example
Someone appointed from outside the group who is of high authority
Eg. a manager
Why may a prescribed leader be needed
Due to a need for new ideas or methods to succeed
What is an emergent leader? Give an example
Someone appointed from within the group and has proven to have strong leadership qualities
Eg. a captain

The leader has a certain quality and presence that makes others listen and follow

An ability to interact with those within and outside the group
What are the 3 leadership styles
Autocratic (task orientated)
Laissez faire
Democratic (person orientated)
What are the qualities of an autocratic leader
Makes all of the decisions
Dictates instruction
Aim to get results and reach targets
Maintain contact with performers throughout the session
What are the qualities of a laissez faire leader
Does very little and leaves the group to it
May give the outcome of the session but will leave the group to conduct the session themselves - relying on the senior members of the team
What are the qualities of an democratic leader
Sympathetic approach
Seeks opinions of others before making decisions
The group will usually continue to work effectively when the coach isn’t present
When is laissez faire effective? What is the problem with it
Effective when the group have lots of experience
Less motivated players may stop working if left alone
When should the autocratic style of leadership be used
With larger groups
In dangerous situations
If time is limited
With hostile groups or cognitive performers
Usually used with male groups
When should the laissez faire style of leadership be used
With advanced performers
If a problem solving approach is required
When should the democratic style of leadership be used
