Q

What are the six basic principles of the constitution and what are examples of each of them?

A

1) Popular Sovereignty: authority gets power from the people / Ex. Elections
2) Federalism: state and federal governments share power / Ex. full faith and credit clause, separation between federal and state, 10th Amendment
3) Separation of powers: keeps one branch from gaining too much power / Ex. 3 different branches with different responsibilities
4) Checks and Balances: allows each branch to have some control over/within the others / Ex. Supreme Court can declare a law unconstitutional, power to impeach, presidential veto
5) Judicial Review: allows courts to declare a law invalid if it’s not in the Constitution / Ex. Marbury v. Madison
6) Limited Government: the government only has certain power or control over things appointed to them / Ex. Bill of Rights
