Group 2 Flashcards
(6 cards)
Describe the trend in reactivity down the group
Reactivity increases
Nuclear charge increases
Atomic radius increases
The attraction between nucleus and outer electrons is less
Increase in shielding
The attraction decreases so less energy is needed to remove outermost electron
Stronger reducing agent
Reaction with water
Using magnesium for equation
Mg doesn’t react but ca has effervescence and test produces squeaky pop
Mg + 2H20 = mg(oh)2 + h2
Reaction with dilute acid
Both mg and ca produce effervescence
Gas tested produces a squeaky pop
Mg+ 2hcl = mgcl2 + h2
Group 2 combustion
2mg + 02 = 2mgo.
Produces a bright flame for both mg and ca
Reaction of group 2 oxide with water
Ca0 + h20 = ca(oh) 2
Increase in temp
Blue in universal indicator
Describe the trend in solubility of group 2 hydroxides
As you go down they become more soluble as the size of the metal ion increases
The charge density gets lower so the ions split stay from each other more easily so there will be a greater concern of oh - ions in the water
