Transition Metals Flashcards
(21 cards)
What is a transition metal
A d block element that forms an ion with an incomplete d subshell/ in there most stable common oxidation state they must have an incomplete d subshell
What is different about cu and cr
Have 1 electron in a orbital , d subshell become full or half full which is a more stable arrangement

What is a catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of reaction by providing an alternate route with lower activation energy, catalysts remains unchanged during the reaction
What properties make transition metals act as catalysts
Providing a surface: transition metals provide a surface on which a reaction can take place , reactants are absorbed into bro the surface of the metal and held in place while a reaction occurs , after the reaction products are desorbed and the metal remains unchanged
Ability to change oxidation state: transition metals have the ability to change oxidation states by gaining or losing electrons , they then bind to reactants forming intermediates as part of the pathway with lower activation energy
