5- cohesiveness
degree to which group members are attracted to each other and are motivated to stay in group
relationship between cohesiveness and productivity
depends on groups performance related norms
if norms for quality, output and cooperation with outsiders are high
cohesive group will be more productive than less cohesive group
If cohesiveness is high and performance norms are low
productivity will be low
if cohesiveness is low and performance norms are high
productivity increases but less than in the high cohesive/high norms situations
cohesiveness and performance norms are both low
productivity falls into low-to-moderate range
how to encourage cohesiveness
make group smaller encourage agreement with group goals increase time members spend together increase group status & perceived difficulty of membership attainment stimulate competition with other groups give rewards to group physically isolate group

the extent to which members of a group are similar or different form one another
in early stages of groups tenure..
diversity increases group conflict
which lowers group morale
raises dropout rate
diverse groups vs homogenous
less satisfied with groups
less cohesive
more conflict
differences of tenure
same level of tenure=high performance
diversity of tenure= performance dropped
important qualifier in level of tenure and performance
effective-team oriented Human Resource practices
team where members values and opinions differ
experience more conflict but leaders who can get group to focus on task at hand and encourage group learning = able to reduce conflicts
diversity can be bad for performance uncreative teams
appropriate org support and leadership may offset problem
if members can wheather differences over time
diversity may help be more open-minded and creative and do better
