Hamlet | The Different Deaths That Occur Flashcards
The different deaths that occur
Some are fitting and just , others needless
Claudius’ death
“He is justly serv’d / it is a poison temper’d by himself” - Claudius undone by his own plotting, which seems to offer a vague form of justice
Laertes’ death
“As a woodcock to mine own spinge” - Laertes undone by his own plotting, which seems to offer a vague form of justice
Polonius’ death
Comparable to Laertes and Claudius’ death because Polonius dies due to his own plotting, offering a vague form of justice
Ophelia’s death
“Mermaid-like” … “creature” - female characters die needlessly (e.g Gertrude)
Ophelia dies off stage and given epitaph, poetic but shows little of character
