Describe the substance use and abuse continuum.
1 non user- does not use substances
2 experimental user- has tried it once or twice and is motivated by the effects
3 occasional user- use substances if it available, usually on special occasions.
4 regular user- uses a regular routine of use. Ex after meals, seek it out
5 dependent user “addict”- psychological and physiological dependence. Mood will change if they cannot use the substance. Negative consequences in life if do not stop use ex jail time

Stimulants- speed up the central nervous system- cocain, crack
Depressants- slow down the central nervous system- tranquilizers, alcohol
Narcotics- used to relieve pain, used in hospitals- morphine, heroin

Slows reactive time, impaired vision, clear thinking and good judgement diminish
