What is the Happy Planet Index formula?
HPI = (Wellbeing x Life expectancy x Inequality of outcomes)/Ecological footprint
Which countries have the highest and lowest HPI? (as of 2019)
Highest HPI= Costa Rica with 62.1
Lowest HPI= Botswana with 22.6
What are the 4 main types of intervention?
Military aid
Military action
Trade embargoes
Development aid
What is military aid?
Money, weapons and expertise given to a country for protection. Sometimes given to opposition fighting for democracy
What is military action?
Direct- Bombing/troops
Indirect- Military/political assistance
What are trade embargoes?
Ban which restricts trade on a country.
Can be used to restrict access to weapons or force a policy change.
What is development aid?
Financial aid given to developing countries to support long term development.
What are the different types of aid?
•Bi-lateral aid
•Multi-lateral aid
•Tied aid
•Humanitarian aid
•Development aid
•Structural adjustment programmes (SAPs)
What is Bi-lateral aid?
Aid given by one country to another, usually with strings attached
What is Multi-lateral aid
Aid which is channeled through IGOs
What is HDI and what aspects does it use?
The Human Development Index uses these measures;
GNI per capita, education, life expectancy etc.
What is the EPI and what aspects does it use?
The Environmental Performance Index uses these measures;
Air and water quality etc.
What is a composite development index?
A composite development index uses multiple pieces of data to create a single value used to compare between regions
How is education contested regarding gender inequality in Pakistan?
Women are barred from exercising their right to education, such as when Malala Yousafzai was shot in 2012 by the Taliban
Why are only GDP and GNI not used to measure development anymore?
There are more factors to development, such as wellbeing and education
