In which years did Henry VII rule?

What problems did Henry VII face early in his reign?
> Opposition from Yorkists.
Needed to ensure his claim to the throne.
Needed to monitor law and order.
Needed to rebuild the country after 30+ years of civil war.
Why did Henry VII face problems early in his reign?
He killed Richard III in the Battle of Bosworth, which meant he didn’t have the ‘Divine Right of Kings’ and therefore shouldn’t rule. Illegitemate ruler.
What did Henry VII do to change the way the country viewed him in his early reign?
> Dated his reign back before the Battle of Bosworth so he could justify it.
Publicly rewarded supporters.
Married Elizabeth of York, as he was Lancastrian, and she was Yorkist. It brought the opposing sides together.
Had his coronation before the first parliament to prove his divine right.
What were the Acts of Attainder?
Parliamentary acts that punished nobles and land-owners if they rebelled against the monarch. Took away land, titles, and money.
What was Tonnage and Poundage?
Raising revenue from imports and exports.
Who was Perkin Warbeck?
A pretender who claimed to be many different people. He cost Henry almost £13 million in today’s money, and was a longlasting threat to Henry as he wanted to take control.
Who was Lambert Simnel?
A pretender who wanted to replace Henry. He was one of the leaders of the Yorkist rebellion and had a strong claim to the throne. Was supported by Margaret of Burgundy and Ireland.
How successful was Henry VII in securing his reign?
Relatively successful. He had an heir, a wife, and had prevented rebellions. However, his power was not entirely secure because uprisings did still happen.
