How did Henry VII treat the nobility?
He used them to keep control but was distrustful of them. Used policies like the Acts of Attainder to keep them in line.
How did Henry VII treat the Gentry?
Gave trusted supporters rewards. He wanted to improve their social stature. JPs were vital for tax collection and maintaining law and order.
How did Henry VII treat Churchmen?
The church had heavy influence on government and on the commoners. This meant that they were very important to society.
How did Henry VII treat commoners?
They were the widest group in society. This meant they were very important as they helped society to function - food, trade, etc. Due to their large numbers, rebellions would have been very powerful. Liked churchmen but not gentry as they collected taxes.
What caused rebellions under Henry VII?
Poverty and Taxes (Extrordinary Revenue).
When was the Cornish Rebellion?
1497
What caused the Cornish Rebellion?
Extrordinary Revenue taxes for the war against Scotland.
How was the Cornish Rebellion a threat?
There were 15,000 rebels involved - large numbers. Perkin Warbeck was also involved and had tried to exploit it for his own gain.
How did the Cornish Rebellion end?
It was crushed, the leaders were punished, and it ended in Anglo-Scottish peace with the Treaty of Aton.

1489
What caused the Yorkshire Rebellion?
Resentment for Extrordinary revenue for the Brittany campaign.
How was the Yorkshire Rebellion a threat?
Murdered the Earl of Northumberland, which demonstrates their power. It was also very early in Henry’s reign, he hadn’t entirely secured his dynasty yet.
How did the Yorkshire Rebellion end?
Henry sent an army of 8000 to defeat them, lead by the Earl of Surrey. It had little support so was quite easy to crush.
What was Humanism?
The belief that education should include philosophy, literacy, science AND religion. They were not anti-catholic, just questioned the role of religion.
Religion under Henry VII
Not many changes, society was very religious and the church had lots of power and influence.
What was Lollardy?
An idea founded in 1350 that the bible should be translated to English. It wasn’t a huge problem under Henry VII, but it was considered to be a crime (heresy).
What was entertainment like under Henry VII?
Theatre was relatively popular, but grew mainly with Shakespeare (Elizabethan Era) and plays were often very religious. Jousting and animal fights were other forms of entertainment.
