What type of government did Henry VII have?
A conciliar government.
What was the Council Learned In Law (CLIL) ?
A way for the King to maintain revenue and his prerogative rights. It was quite unpopular as the taxes targetted Yorkists and those subjected were unable to appeal. Ran by Reginald Bray until he died, then taken over by Empson and Dudley.
What were Bonds and Recognisances?
Payments made as a promise of good behaviour. If people failed to commit to these promises, they had to pay a sum of money.
How many times did Henry VII call Parliament in 24 years?
Only 7 times. He mainly called them when he needed money - Extrordinary Revenue.
What was Extrordinary Revenue?
Money raised by the King through parliament, usually used on emergencies like wars or rebellions.
What were JP’s?
Local gentry who Henry gave some authority in order to maintain law and order. They were volunteers, and because they were local, they made changes that benefitted the area, not the crown.
What was the biggest industry at the time of Henry VII?
Wool and Cloth
What was enclosure?
When common land becomes private. It meant peasants became destitute.
What percentage of English exports were cloth under Henry VII?
90%
Who were the Merchant Adventurers and the Hanseatic League?
Trade groups who rivalled each other. They benefitted Henry by making money through tonnage and poundage.
What and when were the Navigation Acts?
1485-1486, the acts meant that English merchants could only use English ships to transport goods. It encouraged ship building and therefore increased revenue.
What was the function of Henry VI’s Parliament?
To administer realm and advise the King.
