History of Life Flashcards
(11 cards)
Fossils
Remains or traces of a once living organism that is now preserved in a rock
Homologous Structures
Similar body parts that have different functions. But also have similar DNA (meaning they have a common ancestor)
Analogous Strucutre
Structures with a similar function but not the same DNA indicating not having a common ancestor.
Vestigial structures
Structures that a organisms don’t need but is in the body
embyology
The study of how organisms develop from one cell to a whole organism.
Cladograms
cladograms are how evolution is shown and displayed. It is used by using a visual of a tree
How do Cladograms show passing time?
Passing time can be shown by the further the animals are up on the Cladogram, the more recent the organism is
How can you tell what organism has what traits
looking at the trait of the animals, you can determine the common ancestors and what animals have what.
Common ancestor
A common ancestor is a organisms that has shared traits with another organism
Law of Superposition
It’s a principle used to determine the relative ages of rocks, and earth layers
