Unit 5 Flashcards
studyy (14 cards)
Fitness
An organisms ability to survive and reproduce successfully
Adaptation
A physical; feature of a behaviour that helps an organism get food, protect itself, or reproduce
Camouflage
An organism blending in with its enviorment
Mimicry
An organism resembling another organisms in order to provide protection
Behavioral Adaptation
The way an organism act in order to increase fitness
Instinctive Behavior
A behavioral pattern than an organism inherits: they Happen naturally and do not need to be learned
Learned Behavior
A behavior that is obtained by interacting with the environment. They are not passed on to the next generation, instead they taught or learned through experience
Selection Pressure
Factors or reasons that give a certain trait an advantage for organisms’ fitness.
What are the selection pressure
Mate selection
Climate tolerance
Ability to find food/prey
Ability to avoid predators
Mate selection
Females may show a preference for a particular version of a trait, like feather color, in their mate
Climate Tolerance
Climate factors like temperature or precipitation may favor particular versions of a trait like thicker fur
Abliliy to find food or prey
One version of a trait like beak shape may make it easier to find food or prey
Ability to avoid predators
One version of a trait like body color may be a better camouflage
Non-Random Mating
A process in which organisms choose for or against particualr traits when mating. This is an example of a selection pressure
