Homeostasis Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is homeostasis
An organisms ability to control its internal conditions
What is the endocrine system
A collection of glands that produce hormones that travel to effectors around out body
Which is slower the nervous system or the endocrine system
Endocrine system
Why is the endocrine system slower
Has to travel via bloodstream instead of electrical impulses
What is the pituitary gland also known as
The master gland
What does the pituitary gland do
Sends signals to other glands to produce hormones
What hormone does the pancreas produce
Insulin
What hormone does the thyroid produce
Thyroxine
What hormone does the adrenal gland produce
Adrenaline
What is the role of the pancreas
To maintain blood sugar levels
What does the pancreas do with the blood sugar levels are too high
- Produces insulin
- moves glucose from bloodstream to cells
Why is glucose moved from the bloodstream to cells when the blood sugar levels are too high?
For respiration
What happens to the excess glucose that is not moved from the bloodstream to cells
Converted to glycogen
What does the pancreas do when the blood sugar levels are too low?
- produces glucagon
- liver + muscles convert glycogen into glucose
How does type one diabetes occur?
When the pancreas can’t produce enough insulin for the body
How to treat type one diabetes
Injections of insulin
How does type two diabetes occur?
When the cells don’t absorb glucose fully
What is a reason for developing type two diabetes?
Obesity
How can type two diabetes be prevented?
Exercise and not becoming overweight
What does adrenaline do?
Increases heart rate and breathing rate and stressful situations to prepare body for fight or flight
What does thyroxine do?
Controls metabolic rate
What does the body do if thyroxine is too low?
1) Hypothalamus released TRH
2) TRH call the church plan to release TSH
3) TSH causes thyroid to release thyroxine
