Respiratory System Flashcards
(25 cards)
4 parts of the lungs
Trachea
Bronchi
Bronchioles
Alveoli
What are Alveoli
Where gas exchange occurs in the lungs
How are the alveoli adapted for better gas exchange
bumpy
Thin walls
Very good blood supply
What does the trachea have to prevent it from collapsing when we inhale
Rings of cartilage
Why does the alveoli have a good blood supply?
to make gas exchange more efficient
Why does the alveoli have thin walls?
So the diffusion path is very short / quick
Why are alveoli bumpy
To give them a large surface area
What also increases the rate of diffusion in the alveoli
Breathing
Why does breathing increase the rate of diffusion in the alveoli?
Breathing brings in fresh auction and takes out carbon dioxide so the concentration gradient is higher
How is oxygen transported round the body?
Oxygen diffusers into the bloodstream and bind to the haemoglobin in blood cells to be transported around the body
How is carbon dioxide diffused in the body?
It’s dissolved in the blood plasma
What does respiration require required to take place?
Energy
What is aerobic respiration?
With oxygen
Word equation for aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen —> water +carbon dioxide
What is anaerobic respiration?
Without oxygen
Word equation for anaerobic respiration
Glucose —> lactic acid
What does your body do during exercise to increase rate of respiration?
Heart rate and breathing increases to supply more blood and oxygen to your cells
When does anaerobic respiration occur
During intense exercise
When does aerobic respiration occur
During exercise
What happens during anaerobic respiration?
Lactic acid is broken down into glucose by the liver using oxygen
What respiration occurs in plants?
anaerobic respiration
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration plants?
Glucose —> ethanol + carbon dioxide
