The Circulatory Syctem Flashcards
(21 cards)
What type of circulatory system is humans
Double
What carry deoxygenated blood to the hear
Vena cava
What carried deoxygenated blood to the lungs
Pulmonary artery
What carries oxygenated blood back to the heart
Pulmonary vein
What carries oxygenated blood to the body?
Aorta
Why is the left side of the heart thicker?
Because it needs to pump blood around the whole body
What is the function of valves?
To stop backflow of blood
What is the pacemaker?
A group of cells that cause the heart to contract/beat by electrical pulses
Where is the pacemaker found?
In the right atrium
What happens if someone’s pacemaker doesn’t work?
An artificial pacemaker will be used
Role of arteries
To carry oxygenated blood away from the heart
(Apart from pulmonary)
Role of veins
To carry deoxygenated blood to the heart
Function and structure of capillary
One cell thick wall
Diffusion between blood and cell cells
Structure of arteries
Thick walls and thin lumen
Why do arteries have thin lumen?
To withstand pressure
Structure of veins
Thin walls, wide lumen and valves to stop backflow of blood
What is the coronary artery?
On the outside of the heart delivering auctioned blood to keep it pumping
What is CHD?
When the coronary arteries are blocked with fatty acids
What happens when the coronary arteries are blocked with fatty acid?
Could cause heart attacks
What do stents do
Open up blood vessels when blocked with fatty material
What do statins do?
Reduce levels of cholesterol
