Homeostasis Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is homeostasis?
An Organisms ability to regulate internal conditions
Why is homeostasis important?
So enzymes can function properly
What else needs to be regulated by the body?
Blood Glucose Concentration (BGL/C)
Internal Temperature
Water Levels
How does the body do this through?
The nervous system
What does the nervous system consist of?
CNS: Central nervous system (Brain and Spinal Cord)
PNS: Peripheral Nervous System (All other nerves)
What does a receptor do?
Detect changes in stimuli
What is an example of a change in stimuli?
Temperature changes (e.g around heat)
Loud sounds
Hunger
What are the different neurones in which nerves travel to the brain?
Sensory Neurone and Relay Neurones collect electrical signals from the receptors
Signals travel through the gaps known as synapse by neurotransmitter chemicals
When at the spine it reaches the brain and the brain makes a decision on what to do
How do these signals travel back after reaching the brain?
The signals travel to an effector using a motor or relay neurone so it moves your arm
What is a reflex arc?
When signal bypasses brain much quicker (Straight to spine and back to effector at a quicker rate)
What other things can also be effectors?
Glands as they secrete specific chemicals in specific events
How do you investigate reaction time?
- Drop a ruler between a finger & thumb
- Measure distance fallen before caught, repeat and measure mean
- Independent variable (Stimulant e.g energy drink) increases neurotransmission
Depressant (E.g alcohol) decreases this - Calculate reaction time using s= 0.5xaxt^2
