Menstrual Cycle Flashcards
(6 cards)
Where does menstruation occur?
In females after they hit puberty where eggs begin to mature
What is FSH?
Follicle Stimulating Hormone from
the pituitary gland that causes the egg to mature
Causes the ovaries to produce OESTROGEN which thickens uterus linings and stops production of FSH so no eggs no longer mature
Pituitary gland then produces LH (Luteinising Hormone) which causes the egg to release which travels to the uterus by the oviduct
Progesterone is secreted by the ovaries and maintains uterus linings
What options of contraception help prevent pregnancy?
FSH-inhibiting pills (No Eggs mature)
Progesterone injections to stop eggs from being released or implants
Condoms/Diaphrams
IUD/Copper coils stop eggs embedding in lining
Or just avoid sex
What things can cause lack of fertility?
Lack of FSH - Injections allow higher fertility
Name one fertility treatment example
IVF (In-vitro fertilisation)
How does IVF work
- Eggs collected after inducing release with LH to be fertilised in lab
- Viable embryos inserted back into women’s uterus
Success rate is low, and very expensive procedure
Can potentially cause multiple embryos to develop
