Meiosis, DNA and Reproduction Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is Meiosis?
Process by which gametes are made - Genetically different from parent cells
(MITOSIS however produces identical cells)
What are the 4 stages of meiosis?
- Chromosomes in diploid cell (23 Pairs) are copied
- Similar chromosomes pair up and genes are swapped between them
- Cell divides to produce two diploid cells
- These divide again to produce 4 Haploid cells (Gametes)
What process happens in asexual reproduction?
Mitosis
What is asexual reproduction?
Produces off spring from a single parent and a genetically identical copy of the parent cell
What are advantages of asexual reproduction for plants?
Offspring can be better adapted to environment due to variation
What is an advantage for asexual reproduction?
Only one organism is needed in order to reproduce
Which things can do both asexual and sexual reproduction?
Malaria Parasites
Some fungi
What is a genome?
The entire genetic code in an organism
What is DNA?
Double helix polymer, stores genetic code
What is a gene?
Portion of DNA that codes for a protein
Mapping these allow people to identify causes of disorder
What is a genotype?
An organisms specific genetic code
What is a phenotype?
Physical characteristics of a person
What
