Homeostasis, Nervous System, and Hormones Flashcards
(26 cards)
What does the tongue detect?
Chemicals in food
What do the ears detect?
Sound and position of head
What does the skin detect?
Pressure and temperature
What does the nose detect?
Chemical – smell
What do the eyes detect?
Light Waves
What does the cell receptors do?
They convert various stimuli into electrical impulses
What is the difference in the functions of the sensory and motor neurons?
Sensory neurons can carry signals from the outer parts of the body into the main nervous system. Motor neurons carry signals from the central nervous system to the outer parts of your body
What is homoeostasis?
Maintaining an optimum internal environment in the body
What two systems are involved in the coordination and control of the internal environment?
- Hormonal / Chemical Messaging System
- Nervous System
What are the four features of a good control system?
Stimulus, Receptors, Coordination Centre, Effectors
In this exact order
What is insulin?
A hormone produced in the pancreas by the islets of Langerhans, which regulates the amount of blood
What is glucagon?
The home and found in the pancreas which promotes the breakdown of glycogen to glucose in the liver
What does insulin do?
Regulates the amount of glucose in the blood
Where is insulin made?
It is produced in the pancreas
Where is glucagon made?
Formed in the pancreas
What are the effects of insulin?
When you don’t have enough insulin, your body’s cells begin to starve
What are the effects of the lack of glycogen?
Anxiety
Difficulty with swallowing
Vomiting
What is the Endocrine system?
A series of glands that secrete chemicals called hormones into the bloodstream
Where is the Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) produced?
This hormone is produced by the pituitary gland
What is the role of FSH ?
It has two functions :
- It causes the egg to mature
- Stimulates the ovaries to produce oestrogen
Where is the Luteinising Hormone (LH) produced?
This hormone is produced by the pituitary gland
What is the role of LH?
It helps to trigger ovulation. This is the release of the egg from the ovary
Where is Oestrogen produced?
This hormone is produced by the ovaries after stimulation from FSH
What is the role of Oestrogen?
Oestrogen helps to develop the lining of the uterus, stimulates the production of LH and inhibits FSH
