Hormones and Pheromones Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is chemical coordination?
production and distribution of chemicals that regulate and coordinate biological activities
What are hormones?
any chemical produced and secreted by organ or tissue that is carried by body fluids to exert influences elsewhere
What type of chemicals are hormones?
does not belong to a specific chemical compound class
What are two characteristics of hormones?
does not produce the same effect (can be inhibitory or excitatory)
target site must recognize hormone from other chemicals
How are hormones recognized?
interaction between hormone and cell surface
What are endocrine hormones?
produced by isolated glands and released into the circulatory fluid that reaches all body part
What are neurohormones?
produced by neurosecretory neuron cells
What are interorganismal hormones?
chemicals produced by organs and released into the environment, effecting other organisms
What group has intraspecific interorgnaismal hormones, and what is it used for?
insects- mate attraction, population coordination
What group has interspecific interorganismal hormones, and what do they do?
starfish- release chemicals into water to elicit response from prey
Where does study of invertebrate hormones come from?
mostly insects and crustaceans
What do arthropod hormones do?
growth, molting, reproduction, eye pigment migration
What do annelid hormones do?
growth, regeneration, sexual maturation, and stolen formation
