Human resource management
Is the effective management of the relationship between the employer and employees
Employer of choice
An organisation that meets all of their employees expectations is referred to as an employer of choice. This means that the organisation attracts, motivates, and hold on to highly talented workers
Industrial democracy
The process of industrial democracy or empowerment breaks down the traditional “boss-worker” relationship placing new demand on HRM and resulting in the formations of autonomous work teams
Work place diversity
Refers to the differences between employees in an organisation. Diversity encompasses race, gender, ethnic group, age, disability, sexual orientation the terms of employment, personality, and many other characteristics
Flexible working conditions
Are patterns of work that allow organisations to work more efficiently or allow employees go balance work and family responsibilities
Achieving work life balance
Work life balance means achieving the right combination of time devoted to work and time devoted to personal life or family
Occupational health and safety (OHS)
The area of responsibility that employers have to ensure that the workplace is safe for workers and that all possible steps are taken to guarantee that they are free from harm
Work (occupational) health and safety legislation
The act provides a nationally consistent frame work to ensure the health and safety of workers
- protecting workers or other people from harm to their health, safety and welfare arising from work
- encouraging unions and employer organisations to promote improvements in work health and safety practise
Job security
Refers to whether an employee believes they are likely to lose their job either though being made redundant or being dismissed.
Motivation
What drives a person to apply individual effort over a sustainable period of time
- high rate of motivation improves productivity
Maslows theory of motivation
A need it what a person requires. He’s assumes these needs could be arranged according to their importance in a series of steps know as Moslows hierarchy of needs
Motivational theory’s: herzberg and Locke
Two levels of need:
Hygiene factors and motivational factors
The idea is referred to as motivational-hygiene theory
Ethical and social responsible management
Decisions related to human resources involve ethical considerations
The human resource manager will typically be involved in developing a code of conduct
Specific human resource dilemmas
Recruitment
Representation - a human manager can sometimes be called on to act as an employees representative in conflict involving the employee and the manager
Electronic privacy
Performance evaluation - observe and Judge employee performance
Human resource manager
Coordinates all the activities involved, from acquiring to terminating employees of an organisation
