Hypothalamus & Pituitary Gland Flashcards
(5 cards)
Pituitary gland
used to be called “master” endocrine gland because it secretes several hormones that control other endocrine glands. Secretes seven different hormones.
Hypothalamus
The “master” of the pituitary gland, a small region of the brain below the thalamus is a major link between the nervous and endocrine systems. synthesize at least nine different hormones.
Structure of pituitary gland
A pea shaped structure that is measured by 1-1.5 cm in diameter and lies in the hypophyseal fossa or sella turcica of sphenoid bone. Attaches to the hypo by a stalk called infundibulum.
Portions of pituitary gland
- anterior pituitary 75%
- Pars distalis, pars tuberalis.
- Posterior pituitary composed of neural tissue
- Pars nervosa
- infundibulum
- Pars intermedia
Neurosecretory cells
Synthesize the hypothalamic releasing and inhibiting hormones in their cell bodies and package the hormones inside vesicles, which read the axon terminals by axonal transport.
