Louis Riel

A

Represented the rights of the Métis. Killed Thomas Scott to catch Govts attention because govt ignored Métis’ petitions for their rights. Went to insane asylum for thinking he was a prophet from God. Had a family. Stood up for Métis again by going on Trial and opening peoples eyes with a speech.

William Lyon Mackenzie

A

Mackenzie replaced Robert Gourlay as a reform leader in Upper Canada. He was a Scot. He published newspaper articles that strongly criticized the govt and F.C. The ransacked by govt. Elected to the Legislative Assem. In 1828. Led the Upper Canada rebellion in 1837 which failed. He fled to US.

Louis Joseph Papineau

A

Planned to lead rebellion in Lower Canada at the same time as Upper Canada. (December 1837). But it broke out early. He fled to US because he didn’t have enough support.

Lord Durham

A

App’td gov. In chief he was a reformer who reported the events of the rebellions back to Britain in 1838 (Durham Report). Technically a dictator but was lenient with captured rebels. Durham proposed removing the power of legislative council to make laws and res. govt. He proposed the Act of Union 1841 which was made possible Lord Syndenham. He was a racist towards French.

George Etienne Cartier

A

Minister of Defence. Close to JAM. Wealthy Francophone who invested in Railways. Started as Lower Canada Rebellion supporter and changed to confederation supporter later.

William Van Horne

A

Worked on a local railway as a kid. He could do any job on a railway by age 21. At age 29 he had gained a reputation for being able to flip any railway company around into a profitable one. He then became vice pres, pres and chairman of the board of the CPR from 1885 to 1910. He FINISHED THE CPR 5 years ahead of schedule!!

Sir JAM

A

Conservative PM of Canada and father of Confederation. He formed the National Policy. JAM and his Tory govt ignored the Métis’ petitions for rights. He focused on the CPR instead. He was later caught red handed in the Pacific Scandal. Died in 1891.

A

Founder of the Selkirk Settlement.
Earl of Selkirk/Thomas Douglas. Liberal democrat. He established colonies in PEI and Upper Canada to help Scottish tenant farmers emigrate to BNA.
