Industrial Climbing Flashcards
(38 cards)
What is industrial climbing?
A technique for climbing access within an industrial and urban environment
Used to set up a two-rope rescue system for casualty rescue.
What is the highest-risk technique in industrial climbing?
Industrial climbing, even with fall arrest systems
Safety measures are crucial due to high risk.
Define ground fall potential
The initial part of a climb where the climber may hit the ground regardless of a fall arrest system.
Define ledge fall potential
A part of a climb where the climber may hit a ledge or obstruction regardless of a fall arrest system.
Who is referred to as the climber in industrial climbing?
The technician who makes the initial access to a high point.
What is the role of followers in industrial climbing?
Technician/s who use the system set by the climber to access the high point.
What is clearance in the context of industrial climbing?
The minimum amount of clear space below the user that prevents hitting an obstacle in the event of a fall.
What is the main fall arrest equipment used in industrial climbing?
The Petzl twin-tail lanyard fall arrest system.
What must not be exceeded when using workplace positioning lanyards?
A fall greater than a fall factor of 0.5 or greater than 600mm.
List additional equipment required for industrial climbing.
- A life rescue line
- A minimum of two tapes or slings and carabiners for constructing an anchor
- An auto-stop belay device
- An ASAP
- An AZTEK
- A second MGO carabiner with Petzl twin-tail lanyard for climber rescue.
What is essential to understand before undertaking industrial climbing?
Points of contact (POC).
How many points of contact are required when operating on rope?
Two points of contact.
What does a solid hand and foot placement represent in terms of POC?
One POC, but non-secure placements result in a zero POC.
What should be prepared before climbing in industrial climbing?
An efficient climbing set-up and proper pre-climbing planning.
What is the purpose of the rescue plan in industrial climbing?
To rescue the climber if necessary.
What must the climber do upon starting a climb?
- Attach the life rescue line to themselves via a carabiner
- Take equipment required for safety
- Set up a system to fix a rope for followers.
What should a follower do during the initial part of the climb?
Spot the climber to assist in preventing injury in the event of a fall.
What happens to the Jane lanyard during a fall?
It will stretch, and the Absorbica lanyard can deploy up to its full length of 3.2m.
What is the requirement for the MGO carabiner when climbing?
It must be placed on the structure correctly, considering potential loading in the event of a fall.
What should not be done while resting during a climb?
Do not rest and hang from the Jane lanyard as it is considered only one point of contact.
Name one incorrect connection method that poses a danger.
Connecting both MGOs and turning away from the structure.
What is the process for establishing a high point?
- Establish an anchor point for the auto-stop descender
- Haul up the rope attached as a tag line
- Ensure sufficient rope to lower the following climber.
What should intermediate followers do to climb?
- Attach their ASAP to the fixed line
- Climb the structure.
What is the recommended distance between two followers on the rope?
Half the length of the rope, but no less than 5m apart.
