Prompt: Discuss three technological advances/inventions from the Industrial Revolution and its impact on the world. (6 marks)

A

The Steam Engine was made by Two inventors called Thomas Slavery in 1698 and Thomas Newcomen in 1710 which were originally made to pump water from mines. The invention of the steam engine had an impact on the world as it revolutionised manufacturing and transport, and was later used to generate electricity. In 1769 James Watt developed an improved version of the steam engine which was more powerful and practical. The Spinning jenny, invented by James Hargraves in 1765, played a massive part in industrialization as It helped increase the supply of yarn. It could spin eight threads, whereas the traditional spinning wheel could only spread one thread at a time. The Crompton’s mule was a machine invented by Samuel Crompton in 1779. It allowed a single power source to spin multiple machines, and worked with wool or cotton yards.

Q

Prompt: Discuss three negative impacts of the Industrial Revolution. (6 marks)

A

As more factories began to be built around the world during the Industrial Revolution it had a detrimental effect on the environment. The factories caused air pollution as factories released toxic chemicals in the air that were harmful to the environment. When working in the factories during the Industrial Revolution the workers faced horrible working conditions. Working conditions were difficult and exposed employees to many risks and dangers, including cramped work areas with poor ventilation, trauma from machinery, toxic exposures to heavy metals, dust, and solvents. Another negative impact of the Industrial Revolution was how women and children were being exploited when working. Women and children were often picked over male workers so they could be exploited more and also because they were paid less.
