INFANCY ACROSS PIES Flashcards
(15 cards)
Gross motor skills in order
Turning head, kicking, sitting up, crawling, standing up, walking, jumping, running
Firstly, a baby turns their head and as they progress, they start to use their gross motor skills by kicking. Next, they use more of their body by sitting up and eventually crawling. By 18 months they should know how to walk, this progresses into developed gross motor skills by jumping and running.
Fine motor skills
Grasping using ‘pincer grip’, taking off shoes, eating with a spoon, scribbling circular shapes
Firstly, a baby grasps things using a pincer grip using two of their fingers to hold things. They then move onto other activities such as taking off their shoes, followed by becoming independent with eating with a spoon and scribbling circular shapes.
Gestation
9-month period - baby grows in the womb, develop many abilities
i.e. suck, grasp, swallow
Reflexes
Involuntary actions/movement (Innate reflexes = child born with)
REFLEXES
Blinking = Blinks to light/air. Survival = Protect eyes. Time = Permanent
Sucking = Touch mouth stimulates sucking. Survival = Nourishment* Time = B - 6 m*
Swallowing = Liquid in mouth is swallowed. Survival = * Time = *
Gagging = Too much liquid gags/sick. Survival = Avoid choking. Time = *
Palmar grasp = When palm touched,grips finger. Survival = Evolutionary Time = B - 1yr *’

Define growth
Increase in size,weight and height
Describe 2 ways an infant physical growth can be monitored
Regular weighing = to check increase in growth
Monitoring vocalisation = babbling
Define development
Increase in skills and abilities (PIES)
Pattern/Principles of development
Head to toe = Control starts from head, moves downward
Inside to outside = Gross motor develop before fine motor
Same sequence different rates = Children follow same order but own pace
Example Qs : Identify 2 gross motor skills before walking
Standing up,crawling,sitting up, kicking etc
Example Qs: Describe how a baby’s fine motor skills would develop by 2 years
- Define fine motor
- Improve overtime
- Through practice
- Use small movements of fingers such as pincer grip
Language development stages ( receptive lang e.g. reading, productive lang e.g. speech)
3 months : Babbling noises
12 months: Imitate sounds from caters such as “da da”
Around 2 years: 2 word sentences “cat goed” ( cat has gone away)
Promoting lang development
