Flashcards in Inheritance Deck (7):
1

Simplified stages of mitosis

1. Chromosomes are copied
2. Align in middle
3. Move to opposite ends
4. Divides into 2 identical cells

2

Meiosis

special type of cell division by which gamete (sex cells) are made

3

Diploid

2 sets of chromosomes

4

Haploid

1 set of chromosomes

5

Why is meiosis important

leads to a great variation in gametes

6

What does meiosis result in

4 genetically different haploid cells
(23 chromosomes)

7

Simplified stages of meiosis

1. Chromosomes are copied
2. Chromosomes become visible and nuclear membrane breaks down
3. Homologous chromosomes pair up and crossing over occurs
4. Chromosome pairs align in middle
5. Move to opposite ends with independent assortment, random distribution of chromosomes from mother/father
6. Cells divides in 2
7. Cell divides again, resulting in 4 cells
