What are acute injuries and what are the symptoms?

  • Accute injuries cover fractures, dislocations, sprains, strains)
  • They happen suddenly
  • Sudden/severe pain
  • Swelling
  • Non weight bearing
  • Restricted movement
  • Extreme weakness
  • Deformation

Dislocations

A
  • an injury caused when the normal position of a joint is altered
  • caused by a fall or blow, sometimes from contact sport
  • swollen, v painful, visibly out of place, may not be able to move it
  • when properly repositioned, joint will move normally again in a few weeks
  • once shoulder/knee has been dislocated, it’s likely to happen again
  • wearing protective gear may help prevent dislocations

A
  • manipulation to reposition bones
  • medicine
  • splint/sling
  • rehabilitation

Sprains/Strains

A
  • sprains: when one of more of the ligaments sre stretched/twisted/torn
  • often caused when too much force is applied to a joint
  • strains: when muscle fibres stretch/tear
  • occur when muscle is stretched beyond limits/forced to contract too quickly

What are chronic injuries and their symptoms?

A
  • includes achillies tendinitis and stress fractures
  • occur as a result of playing sports/exercising for a long period of time
  • pain when performing
  • dulle ache at rest
  • swelling

What are stress fractures?

A
  • overuse injury rather than a mechanical injury
  • muscle becomes stressed and transfers it to bones causing a small crack

What is achillies tendinitis and it’s symptoms?

A
  • caused by overuse of achillies tendon
  • common for runners/older athletes
  • can cause tendon to rupture
  • lots of pain/swelling
  • may look abnormal
