What is collective identity?

A
  • A team can be recognised easily as they’re wearing the same uniform/colour.
  • This creates affiliation which develops motivation and belonging.

A

Achieveing a shared goal helps to bind poeple together so they commit to eachother and work hard to achieve the goal, this raises motivation.

Group formation - Tuckmans model

A
  • Forming: getting to know eachother, strengths and weaknesses, will people fit in, develop social relationships, reliant on coach to bring group together, figure out the goal.
  • Storming: in fighting and conflict as people establish roles/positions, confrontation with leaders.
  • Norming: cooperation, conflicts are resolved. The team begins to unify and cooperate focussing onn achieving goals, standards/norms are accepted and the cohesion of the team develops. Motivation and success rises.
  • Performing: common goals, success, team support eachother and understand their roles. Motivation and enjoyment is high and respect for other members and leaders is high.

How long?

A
  • Time taken in each stage changes - settled teams accept new players quickly while representative teams take longer to settle.
  • Whether this process occurs is down to the cohesion of the group.
