Inputs And Outputs Of The Water Cycle Flashcards

1
Q

Precipitation. ( output)

A

Moisture leaves the atmosphere

Through rain,snow,hail, sleet and condensation

2
Q

Ablation ( output)

A

Water is released from ice cover through melting, evaporation and sublimation

Also through sublimation ( ice to water vapour)

Q

Evapotranspiration ( input)

A

The combination of evaporation ( from oceans, soils, lakes and rivers) and transpiration making up the water in the atmospheric store

Q

Inputs and outputs

A

Form the water cycle budget

USGS ( US Geological survey ) suggests 505,000 km cubed of water is circulated in the global water budget as inputs and outputs between principle stores
Water budget = volume of water movement by processes to different stores.

Eg, from oceans, vegetation, permeable rock such as (sandstone and gravel),ice sheets by precipitation, evapotranspiration, overland flow

Q

Overland flow

A

Transfers from land to rivers which eventually meet the sea

Some infiltrates the soil and becomes groundwater flow then reaches rivers.

Q

Percolation

A

Deep infiltration into rocks to become aquifers

Eg. Nubian sandstone aquifer system extends through many countries to the stretch of the Sahara.

Can reach the surface as springs and seepages contribute to surface run -off
