Long- Trm Changes In The Water Cycle Flashcards

1
Q

Water cycle

A

Net transfer of water from the ocean reservoir to storage in ice sheets, glaciers and permafrost.

In glacials, the sea level falls by 100 to 130 m and ice sheets and glaciers expand to cover 1/3 of continental mass

Ice sheets advance they destroy the tracts of forest grasslands

Area of vegetation cover and water stored in the biosphere shrinks

Tropics - climate becomes drier

Deserts and grasslands displace large areas of rainforest

Lower evapotranspiration rates during glacial phases - reduces the exchange of water between the atmosphere, oceans, biosphere and soils. This with more freshwater stored as snow slows the water cycle
