Open And Closed Systems Of Carbon And Water Cycles Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is an open system
Boundaries are open to both and outputs of energy and matter
Carbon can move from a forest or peat bog to another store.
What is a closed system
Inputs and outputs of energy but no movement of materials are moved across the boundaries of systems
Finite amount of water on Earth
What is a system
Groups of objects and the relationship that bind them together
What are the major flows between stores
Pecipitation and evaporation
Drainage basins - open systems
Think inputs, processes, stores and outputs
Inputs: precipitation, energy from the sun
Processes: condensation , evaporation, evapotranspiration, stem flow, run-off, percolation, infiltration, groundwater flow
Stores: atmosphere, vegetation, cryospheric stores, oceans, rivers, acquirers and lakes
Outputs: rivers, human extraction, groundwater flow into a basin
