What is learned helplessness
A sense of inability to seek help or solution due to repeated negative reinforcement
What happened in Romaina in relation to learned helplessness
War broke out in Romania, children eneded up in orphanages, infants were not given adequate care. Children no longer cried beacuse they had learnt that no one comes to their side.
Explain Rutters study, The English and Romanian Adoption study (2011)
Followed Romanians adopted by Britain to test whether good care can make up for poor early experinces. When children arrived in UK they showed signs of delayed intellectul development. Mean IQ for children adopted before 6 months was 102, children adopted btween 6 motnhs and 2 years old mean IQ was 77.
What was the procedure of the Bucharest Early intervention project
Zenah et al (2005)
Assessed attachment in 95 children aged 12-31 months who had spent most of their lives in institutional care (90% on average). They were compared to a control group of 50 children who had never lived in an institution building. Their attachment type was measure using the Strange situation.
What were the findings of the Bucharest intervention project

They found that 74% of the control group came out as securely attached in the strange situation. However only 19% of the institutional grroup were securely attached, with 65% being classified with disorganised attachment. Disinhibted attachment applied to 44% of institutionalised children opposed to less than 20% of the controls.
