What was the aim of Schaffer&Emmerson (1964)
To investigate the relationship between age and the development of attachment
What was the procedure of Schaffer & Emmerson (1964) attachment study
Time sampling- 60 babies at monthly intervals for first 18 months in thier own homes. Interviewed parents about baby E.g does baby cry when you leave the room
What are the 4 stages of attachment
Stage 1- Asocial stage
Stage 2- Indiscriminate attachment
Stage 3- specific Attachment
Stage 4- Multiple attachment
Expalin the Asocial stage (first few weeks)
Newborn is easily attached to any human. Most babies respond happily to any caregiver including non human objects.
Explain the indiscriminate attachment (2-7 months)
Preference for people over objects. infants learn to distinguish primary and secondary caregivers. Accept care from anyone
Explain Specific attachment (7-9months)
special prefernece for a single attachment figure. Shows fear of strangers and unhappiness when seperated from primary caregiver.
Explain Multiple attachments (9 motnhs +)
Baby becomes increasingly independant and forms several attachments with secondary care givers.
