Insulin Flashcards
(24 cards)
When reconstituting which insulin do you draw up first
short acting (clear)
solute
solid material AKA powdered med
diluent
specific fluid used to dissolve solute
solution
solute and diluent thoroughly mixed
What are rapid acting insulins
aspart
lispro
glusiline
what are intermediate acting
insulin isophane supsension
what are long acting
glargine
detemir
Diabetes Mellitus
chronic metabolic diseases due to insufficient insulin secretion and/or utilization
characterized by elevated blood glucose and abnormal carbohydrate metabolism
Diabetes mellitus type 1
characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to insufficient insulin production and/or destruction of beta cells in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans
requires lifelong insulin replacement
Diabetes Mellitus type 2
most common form
characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to insufficient insulin utilization and/or insufficient insulin production
can be controlled with diet and lifestyle changes
Diabetic ketoacidosis
emergency condition and complication of diabetes diagnoses by elevated blood glucose levels
blood pH less than 7.3
elevated ketones in blood and urine
often coma
requires hospitalization and insulin therapy and other meds
Glucagon
blood glucose- raising hormone secreted by alpha cells in pancreatic islets of Langerhans
released in response to a fall below normal blood glucose levels
may be admin as treatment for severe hypoglycemia levels
hypoglycemia
decreased level of glucose in blood
usually more severe in insulin-dependent patients
major potential adverse effect of insulin admin
Insulin
blood glucose-lowering hormone produced by beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas
facilitates entry of glucose into muscle cells and other sites for storage as an energy source
insulin helps glucose get IN to cells
insulin shock
urgent hypoglycemic condition
may be caused by an overdose of insulin for current glucose level or as a result of taking usual dose of insulin followed by inadequate or delayed dietary intake
glycosylated hemoglobin (A1c)
determines average blood glucose level over the past 2-3 months by measuring the amount of glucose attached to hemoglobin in the RBCs
insulin apart onset of action
10-20 min
insulin lispro onset of action
15-30 min
insulin glusiline onset of action
20-30 min
NPH insulin onset
1-2 hr
insulin glargine onset
1 hr
insulin detemir onset
0.8- 2hr
reconstitution steps
- read label and gather correct supplies + diluent
- un-tab both vials
- draw up correct # of mL of air
- inject air into diluent vial and withdraw
- inject diluent into solute vial
- change needles
how to mix insulin
- gather supplies + check insulin and roll NPH
- draw air of Rx NPH amount
- inject air to NPH vial do not withdraw only pull out syringe
- draw up air of Rx regular insulin
- inject air and withdraw regular insulin
- withdraw from NPH without pushing any med from the syringe in
