9
Q

Diabetes mellitus type 1

A

characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to insufficient insulin production and/or destruction of beta cells in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans

requires lifelong insulin replacement

Q

Diabetic ketoacidosis

A

emergency condition and complication of diabetes diagnoses by elevated blood glucose levels
blood pH less than 7.3
elevated ketones in blood and urine
often coma
requires hospitalization and insulin therapy and other meds

12
Q

Glucagon

A

blood glucose- raising hormone secreted by alpha cells in pancreatic islets of Langerhans

released in response to a fall below normal blood glucose levels

may be admin as treatment for severe hypoglycemia levels

Q

hypoglycemia

A

decreased level of glucose in blood

usually more severe in insulin-dependent patients

major potential adverse effect of insulin admin

14
Q

Insulin

A

blood glucose-lowering hormone produced by beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas

facilitates entry of glucose into muscle cells and other sites for storage as an energy source

insulin helps glucose get IN to cells

Q

insulin shock

A

urgent hypoglycemic condition
may be caused by an overdose of insulin for current glucose level or as a result of taking usual dose of insulin followed by inadequate or delayed dietary intake

16
Q

glycosylated hemoglobin (A1c)

A

determines average blood glucose level over the past 2-3 months by measuring the amount of glucose attached to hemoglobin in the RBCs

18
Q

insulin lispro onset of action

19

insulin glusiline onset of action

20
Q

NPH insulin onset

21
Q

insulin glargine onset

22
Q

insulin detemir onset

23
Q

reconstitution steps

A
  1. read label and gather correct supplies + diluent
  2. un-tab both vials
  3. draw up correct # of mL of air
  4. inject air into diluent vial and withdraw
  5. inject diluent into solute vial
  6. change needles
24
Q

how to mix insulin

A
  1. gather supplies + check insulin and roll NPH
  2. draw air of Rx NPH amount
  3. inject air to NPH vial do not withdraw only pull out syringe
  4. draw up air of Rx regular insulin
  5. inject air and withdraw regular insulin
  6. withdraw from NPH without pushing any med from the syringe in
