Integumentary System Flashcards
(39 cards)
What does the system consist of?
It consists of skin, glands, hair, & nails
Dermis
connective tissue. collagen & elastic fibers, nerves, blood vessels, hair follicles, glands
Epidermis
(stratified squamous)
-avascular supply
Hypodermis/Subcutaneous layer
(not skin)
-made of adipose & areolar
Which layer of the epidermis is found in the soles of feet & palms?
stratum lucidum
Which layer of the epidermis does cell division occur?
stratum basale
Melanocytes
-same # in everyone, some produce more melanin
-contains melanin
Keratinocytes
-skin cells that fill epidermis
-as cells die, they fill with keratin (protein)
Stratum corneum
filled with keratin
Stratum granosium
has apostatis
Stratum Spinosium
contains langerhorn cells & melanocytes
Langerhorn cells
first line of defense from UV and help immune response
Lamelar granules
keep moisture in our skin
Merkel cells
touch receptors (pain, temp, itchy, tickling)
Apostasis
found in stratum granosium, programmed cell death
Moles
-benign= overgrowth of melanin
the ABC’s
-asymmetry= divided in 1/2 & it doesn’t look the same
-border= scalloped instead of even
-color= black, blue, red, brown w/ white dots
SIZE: over 6 mm in diameter
Albinism
genetic condition, melanocytes shut down from producing melanin, risk of skin cancer
Vitaligo
autoimmune disorder, melanocytes are destroyed from producing melanin
What causes goosebumps?
arrector pili
Intradermal injection
-administered directly into dermis
-slow absorption
ex. allergy, TB, botox
Subcutaneous injection
-slow absorption
ex. measle in insulin
Intramuscular injection
-quick absorption
-lots of blood vessels
ex. vaccines
Intravenous injection (I.V)
-quickest absorption
ex. chemo, antibiotics, dehydration
Nails are made of:
epidermal cells & 25 mg of biotin
