Integumentary System Flashcards
(10 cards)
epidermis
superficial (topmost) layer of skin composed of keratinized, stratified (layered), squamous (flat, scale-like) epithelium
dermis
middle layer of skin that contains blood vessels, glands, hair follicles, and nerve endings
hypodermis

keratin
insoluble protein that makes up hair and nails
keratinocyte
most abundant epidermal cell filled with keratin from keratinization; protects skin and underlying tissues
sebaceous gland
exocrine gland in the dermis associated with a hair follicle that secretes oil (sebum)
hair follicle
structure of epithelium that surrounds the root of a hair
nail
hard, keratinized epidermal cells; produced by the nail matrix
sweat gland
gland in the dermis not attached to a hair follicle that secretes sweat
