Nervous System Flashcards
(33 cards)
acetylcholine
neurotransmitter
one of the functions: released by motor neurons to activate muscles
central nervous system (CNS)
brain and spinal cord
peripheral nervous system (PNS)
everything else that’s not brain or spinal cord; cranial/spinal nerves, plexuses, peripheral nerves
cranial nerve
from brain to head/neck
vagus nerve
10th cranial nerve; goes from brain to neck, chest, and abdomen
plexus (nerves)
large network of nerves in PNS, ie cervical, brachial, lumbosacral
sensory (afferent) nerves
carry messages to the brain
motor (efferent) nerves
carry messages from the brain
autonomic nervous system
part of PNS, involuntary stuff
sympathetic/parasympathetic
part of autonomic nervous system
sympathetic activate in stress/crisis; parasympathetic balances that and relaxes stuff
dendrite
branching fibers of neuron that receive impulses
axon
long thing that carries impulse away from cell body
myelin sheath
insulates axons; neurons appear white
white matter = myelin, grey matter = no myelin
terminal end fiber
end of axon
synapse
space where impulse jumps from neuron to neuron via a release of neurotransmitter
vesicle (neurons)
tiny sacs at terminal end containing neurotransmitters
ganglion
group of neuron cell bodies/neuron clusters; mainly in PNS
glial (neuroglial) cells
stromal tissue of nervous system
parenchyma is essential functions & stroma is support/structure
glial cells guard what goes into nerves from blood, making up the BBB (blood-brain barrier)
cerebrum
largest thinking part of brain; lots of lobes
cerebral cortex
outer nerve sheet covering the brain
gyri and sulci
gyri are folds, sulci are grooves
ventricles of brain
spaces/canals in cerebrum where CSF is
CSF cushions, protects from shock
thalamus
triage center; decides what’s important; awareness/consciousness
hypothalamus
controls temperature, sleep, emotions like fear, pleasure, lust, and integrates sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous systems
