23
Q

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

A

A cancer of skin cells that arises in keratinocytes superficial to the basal layer, usually appearing in areas exposed to sunlight, the main risk factor). It rarely metastasizes. It shares the typical nonmelanoma skin cancer pattern: no painful lesions that itch or bleed and don’t heal.

24
Q

Malignant Melanoma

A

Skin cancer of the melanocytes that can quickly become life threatening because it quickly metastasizes to the bones, liver or central nervous system.

25
Q

First, second and third degree burns

A

First degree: mild irritation to the superficial dermis. No blisters and heal in 2-3 days

Second: damage into deeper layers of epidermis. Blisters will be present.

Third: damage to the dermis or deeper

26
Q

Decubitus ulcers

A

Also known as bed sores, pressure sores, and tropic ulcers. They are caused by inadequate blood flow to skin that is compressed between bone and another surface. The skin cells die and then bacteria invade.
