Q

Should a muscle strain be massaged?

A

Yes. After the acute stage of inflammation has passed massage can influence the production of useful scar tissue, reduce adhesions and edema, and rest abolish range of motion.

Q

Should sprains be massaged?

A

Q

Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease

A

Chronic or traumatic irritation at the insertion of the quadriceps tendon in combination with adolescent growth spurts

17
Q

Signs/symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease

A

Signs: hot, swollen tibial tuberosity

Symptoms: painful tibial tuberosity

18
Q

Plantar Fasciitis

A

Degeneration (with some inflammation) of the plantar fascia (due to collagen braking down)

19
Q

Signs/symptoms of plantar fasciitis

A

Signs: none

Symptoms: acutely painful after prolonged immobility. It feels sharp and like a bruise, usually at the anterior calcaneus.

20
Q

Is massage contraindicated for plantar fasciitis?

A

No. Massage of the fascia can improve he quality of scar tissue. Massage can also relieve tension in the calf muscles that out strain on the plantar fascia. If acute (unlikely) avoid deep work.

21
Q

Tenosynovitis

A

Inflammation of a tendon and its enveloping sheath

22
Q

Tinnitus

A

Ringing, booming or whistling in the ear.

23
Q

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

A

Occlusion of nerve and blood supply to the arm

24
Q

Signs/Symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome

A

Signs: possible discoloration of arm and hand from impaired circulation

Symptoms: shooting pains, weakness, numbness, paresthesia

25
Q

Should someone with thoracic outlet syndrome be massaged?

A

Yes. Massage can create space for u impeded blood and nerve impulse. Care must be taken not to exacerbate pressure on the nerves and blood vessels.

26
Q

Which bone cells alter bone shape?

A

Osteoblasts (bone Builders)

Osteoclasts (bone Clearers)
