Tsar Alexander II was assassinated in 1881 causing a crisis moment for the Tsarist system in
Russia despite him having freed the serfs. His son, Alexander III came to the throne and
became known as the ‘Great Repressor’ because of the steps he took to secure the Tsarist
state.

In 1905, the tsar was Nicholas II who was an autocrat, an absolute ruler, who had supreme
power over his subjects. As far as the tsars were concerned, they had been appointed by God
to lead and guide their people.
