Intro to Research methods Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is research?
Research is a systematic process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information in order to increase our understanding ofa phenomenon about which we are interested or concerned
What is Empirical research?
Research based on direct or indirect observation and experimentation
Approach: Structured and methodical
Data collection: Involves gathering data through experiments, surveys, observations, etc.
Analysis: Objective, often involving statistical techniques
Example: Experiments, surveys, case studies, observations, content analysis
What is Non-empirical research?
Research based on existing knowledge, theories, logical reasoning, and analysis
Approach: Often theoretical, conceptual, or analytical
Data collection: Relies on existing literature, theoretical frameworks, and logical analysis
Analysis: Interpretive, using logical reasoning and synthesis of existing information
Example: Literature reviews, theoretical analysis, philosophical inquiry, conceptual research
What are the goals of research?
Description
*Identification and description of phenomena
Explanation
* Offer reasons why a phenomena occurs
Prediction
* The capability of knowing in advance when certain events/ behaviour should occur
Control
* Results and findings can be used to control situations in practical setting (applied research) and translate to somethings useful to humankind
What is a business research?
Business research is a systematic and objective process of gathering, recording, and analyzing data for aiding business decision-making. It helps businesses understand market trends, consumer behaviors, and the effectiveness of their strategies and operations
What is the purpose of Business Research?
Decision making
Problem solving
Strategy development
Market understanding
Performance evaluation
What are the components of the research process?
- Identifying the problem
- Literature review
- Setting research objectives, questions, conceptual frameworks and hypotheses
- Choosing the study design
- Data collection
- Data analysis
- Preparation of final report
What are the types of research?
Quantitative research:
Use numbers to analyze.
tests a hypothesis
Four main types of quantitative research; descriptive, correlational, casual-comparative/Quasi-experimental and experimental research
Qualitative research:
Use words and meanings to analyze
Qualitative research allow to explore ideas and concepts.
Four main types of qualitative research; grounded theory, ethnography, narrative research, historical research and case studies
What is grounded theory?
Grounded theory is a systematic set of procedures to develop an inductively derived theory from the data
What is ethnography? QL
Where a researcher closely observes and records the daily life of another culture and writes an account of it
What is narrative research? QL
Focuses on writing the spoken words of an individual through their own stories
What is historical research? QL
Involves analyzing and learning the past through evidences
What is a descriptive research? QN
Used to describe characteristics of a population or phenomenon being studied
What is correlational research? QN
Type of non-experimental research method in which a researcher measures two variables, understands and assesses the statistical relationship between them with no influences from any extraneous variable
What is a Quasi-experimental research? QN
Tries to find the cause and effect relationship among variables
What is experimental research? QN
Researcher manipulates the independent variable to study the effect of this manipulation on the dependent variable
What are mixed methods of research?
Using of both qualitative and quantitative research methods for research
4 main types:
- triangulation design
- embedded design
- explanatory design
- exploratory design
