Explain three Muslim responses to the causes of crime
-Poverty. Muslims are expected to donate 2.5% of their spare money and are forbidden to gamble.
-Drugs/Alcohol. Muslims are not permitted to do drugs or alcohol. They are taught by the Quran that alcohol leads to sins.
-Low Self Esteem. Islamic messages state ‘no Muslims should have low self esteem’ because they have been given the gift of life by Allah.
Aims of punishment
Deterrent- ensuring the punishment is so unpleasant that a person will not commit the same crime
Protection- Removing dangerous criminals from society
Rehabilitation- Attempting to help a person improve through their punishment
Law of Quisas
An attitude towards punishment meaning ‘an eye for an eye’.
Why is justice important to Muslims?
-Embodies Allah’s characteristics
-Living a just and fair life will allow them to get into heaven
-Muslims are told by Mohammed to live a just life
Hudud Crimes and Hudud Punishments
Crimes against God. Hudud Punishments are used as a strong deterrent against future crimes.
