John Chapter 10

Question 1

10 Amen, amen dico vobis: qui non intrat per ostium in ovile ovium, sed ascendit aliunde, ille fur est et latro.

Answer 1

“I tell you the truth, the man who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. (John 10:1)

Question 2

2 Qui autem intrat per ostium, pastor est ovium.

Answer 2

The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep. (John 10:2)

Question 3

3 Huic ostiarius aperit, et oves vocem ejus audiunt, et proprias oves vocat nominatim, et educit eas.

Answer 3

The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. (John 10:3)

4 Et cum proprias oves emiserit, ante eas vadit: et oves illum sequuntur, quia sciunt vocem ejus.

When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. (John 10:4)

5 Alienum autem non sequuntur, sed fugiunt ab eo: quia non noverunt vocem alienorum.

But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” (John 10:5)

Jesus used this figure of speech, but they did not understand what he was telling them. (John 10:6)

Therefore Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. (John 10:7)

8 Omnes quotquot venerunt, fures sunt, et latrones, et non audierunt eos oves.

All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. (John 10:8)

9 Ego sum ostium. Per me si quis introierit, salvabitur: et ingredietur, et egredietur, et pascua inveniet.

I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. (John 10:9)

10 Fur non venit nisi ut furetur, et mactet, et perdat. Ego veni ut vitam habeant, et abundantius habeant.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10)

The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. (John 10:12)

13 mercenarius autem fugit, quia mercenarius est, et non pertinet ad eum de ovibus.

The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. (John 10:13)

14 Ego sum pastor bonus: et cognosco meas, et cognoscunt me meae.

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me - (John 10:14)

15 Sicut novit me Pater, et ego agnosco Patrem: et animam meam pono pro ovibus meis.

just as the Father knows me and I know the Father - and I lay down my life for the sheep. (John 10:15)

16 Et alias oves habeo, quae non sunt ex hoc ovili: et illas oportet me adducere, et vocem meam audient, et fiet unum ovile et unus pastor.

I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. (John 10:16)

No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.” (John 10:18)

19 Dissensio iterum facta est inter Judaeos propter sermones hos.

At these words the Jews were again divided. (John 10:19)

20 Dicebant autem multi ex ipsis: Daemonium habet, et insanit: quid eum auditis?

Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed and raving mad. Why listen to him?” (John 10:20)

21 Alii dicebant: Haec verba non sunt daemonium habentis: numquid daemonium potest caecorum oculos aperire?

But others said, “These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?” (John 10:21)

Then came the Feast of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, (John 10:22)

23 Et ambulabat Jesus in templo, in porticu Salomonis.

and Jesus was in the temple area walking in Solomon’s Colonnade. (John 10:23)

24 Circumdederunt ergo eum Judaei, et dicebant ei: Quousque animam nostram tollis? si tu es Christus, dic nobis palam.

The Jews gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” (John 10:24)

25 Respondit eis Jesus: Loquor vobis, et non creditis: opera quae ego facio in nomine Patris mei, haec testimonium perhibent de me:

Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father’s name speak for me, (John 10:25)

26 sed vos non creditis, quia non estis ex ovibus meis.

but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. (John 10:26)

27 Oves meae vocem meam audiunt, et ego cognosco eas, et sequuntur me:

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. (John 10:27)

28 et ego vitam aeternam do eis, et non peribunt in aeternum, et non rapiet eas quisquam de manu mea.

I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. (John 10:28)

29 Pater meus quod dedit mihi, majus omnibus est: et nemo potest rapere de manu Patris mei.

My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all ; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. (John 10:29)

30 Ego et Pater unum sumus.

I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30)

31 Sustulerunt ergo lapides Judaei, ut lapidarent eum.

Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, (John 10:31)

32 Respondit eis Jesus: Multa bona opera ostendi vobis ex Patre meo: propter quod eorum opus me lapidatis?

but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?” (John 10:32)

33 Responderunt ei Judaei: De bono opere non lapidamus te, sed de blasphemia; et quia tu homo cum sis, facis teipsum Deum.

“We are not stoning you for any of these,” replied the Jews, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.” (John 10:33)

34 Respondit eis Jesus: Nonne scriptum est in lege vestra, Quia ego dixi: Dii estis?

Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are gods’ ? (John 10:34)

35 Si illos dixit deos, ad quos sermo Dei factus est, et non potest solvi Scriptura:

If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came - and the Scripture cannot be broken - (John 10:35)

36 quem Pater sanctificavit, et misit in mundum vos dicitis: Quia blasphemas, quia dixi: Filius Dei sum?

what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’? (John 10:36)

Question 37

37 Si non facio opera Patris mei, nolite credere mihi.

Answer 37

Do not believe me unless I do what my Father does. (John 10:37)

Question 38

38 Si autem facio: etsi mihi non vultis credere, operibus credite, ut cognoscatis, et credatis quia Pater in me est, et ego in Patre.

Answer 38

But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.” (John 10:38)

Question 39

39 Quaerebant ergo eum apprehendere: et exivit de manibus eorum.

Answer 39

Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp. (John 10:39)

Question 40

40 Et abiit iterum trans Jordanem, in eum locum ubi erat Joannes baptizans primum, et mansit illic;

Answer 40

Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. Here he stayed (John 10:40)

41 et multi venerunt ad eum, et dicebant: Quia Joannes quidem signum fecit nullum.

Answer 41

and many people came to him. They said, “Though John never performed a miraculous sign, all that John said about this man was true.” (John 10:41)

42 Omnia autem quaecumque dixit Joannes de hoc, vera erant. Et multi crediderunt in eum.

And in that place many believed in Jesus. (John 10:42)
