Joints Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is an articulation?
Another name for a joint-a site where two or more bones meet
What are the functions of joints?
- Give skeletal mobility
- Hold skeleton together
What are the two classifications of joints
- Functional
- Structural
What are the functional classifications of joints based on?
Amount of movement that the joint allows
What are the 3 functional classifications of joints
- Synarthroses
- Amphiarthroses
- Diarthroses
Synarthroses
Immovable joints
Amphiarthroses
Slightly movable joints
Diarthroses
Freely movable joints (“traditional”) joint
What are the structural classification of joints based on?
Material binding bones together and the presence or absence of a joint cavity
What are the 3 structural classifications of joints?
- Fibrous joints
- Cartilaginous joints
- Synovial joints
What are Fibrous joints
- Bones joined by dense fibrous connective tissue
- No joint cavity
- Most synarthrotic (this depends on what?)
What are the 3 kinds of fibrous joints?
- Sutures
- Syndesmoses
- Gomphoses
Sutures
Joint held together with VERY short interconnecting fibers and bone edges interlock
Only found in the skull
Syndesmoses
Joint held together by a ligament (longer than a suture)
Ex: fibula and tibia
Gomphoses
“Peg in socket” fibrous joint
Ex: tooth in socket
What are Cartilaginous joints?
- Bones united by cartilage
- No joint cavity
- Not highly movable
What are the two types of cartilaginous joints?
- Synchondroses
- Symphyses (amphiarthroses)
What is an example of a synchondroses cartilaginous joint?
Bones united by hyaline cartilage
Ex: epiphyseal plate
What is an example of a symphyses cartilaginous joint?
Bones united by fibrocartilage
Ex: The pubic symphysis
What are synovial joints?
- Bones separated by a fluid-filled joint cavity
- All are diarthrotic
- Include all limb joints
