Area with its own ruler but under British crown protection who controls its military and influences domestic policies.

What is an occupied area?
Occupation:
Area contains British soldiers and settlers but not formally controlled.
What is a client state?
Client State:
Area with its own rulers but strong British influence restricts the rulers independence politically, militarily and economically.
What does chartered company rule mean?
Chartered Company Rule:
Area ran by trading company through local rulers of the indigenous populous with a special licence from the government giving them political and economic rights.
