Q
Exegesis
A
- Definition: The process of critically interpreting and explaining a biblical text.
- Purpose: To understand the meaning of Scripture as the original audience would have, considering the historical and cultural context.
Example: Looking at the Parable of the Good Samaritan and studying what “neighbor” meant in Jesus’ time.
2
Q
Hermeneutics
A
- Definition: The theory and method of interpreting the Bible or any religious text.
- More general than exegesis: Exegesis is what you do, and hermeneutics is how and why you do it.
Example: Asking questions like “What does this passage mean today?” or “How does this apply to my life?”
3
Q
Magisterium
A
- What is it? The official teaching authority of the Catholic Church.
- Who’s in it? The Pope and bishops in communion with him.
- Role: Interprets Scripture and Tradition to guide the faithful.
